Building Belief : Silktails Committed to Learning Through Adversity

As the Kaiviti Silktails prepare to face the Dragons in Round 14, Executive Director and Board Member Stephen Driscoll has addressed the club’s recent performances, shared insights on the group’s mindset, and outlined the path forward for the remainder of the season.

Reflecting on a tough stretch that has included a five-game losing run, Driscoll acknowledged the frustration around results — but also highlighted the resilience and competitiveness shown week after week.

“Although I am disappointed we are not winning, the positive is we are putting ourselves in a position to win each week,” he said. “That tells us we’re not far off.”

Last week’s clash with the Bulldogs — reigning back-to-back premiers — was a prime example. The Silktails held the lead but ultimately saw the game slip away, with lessons to take from the key moments that shaped the outcome.

“I think that was a clear case of us not managing the game from in front,” Driscoll said. “In moments where we should have scored, we came up with errors — and they capitalised. That’s why they’re the defending champs.”

Despite the recent results, the club remains focused on development, maintaining high standards, and continuing to push for improvement. Driscoll emphasised the importance of consistent coaching, performance planning, and accountability both on and off the field.

“We continue to provide the players with the right performance planning and coaching information to learn from our mistakes and get better,” he said. “That, along with ensuring our standards off the field are maintained, is crucial.”

The current stretch of three games in 11 days presents additional challenges. With limited time between travel and fixtures, this week marks the team’s last full preparation block before flying home on Sunday and then returning mid-week to face the Sharks.

“The Bulldogs game was the first in that stretch,” Driscoll noted. “If we do what we did last week against the defending premiers — and take our learnings from those key moments — we know we can get the job done against the Dragons.”

Fan support has remained a constant strength through a challenging season, and the club recognises how vital that continued belief is.

“Our fans are always so supportive,” he said. “It’s up to us now to repay those fans and get the win on the weekend. We have some really exciting announcements coming off the field over the next fortnight, so a win for them and our sponsors is so important this week.”

With three wins from 13 matches, the team is realistic but determined. The club tracks performance in four-week blocks and remains confident that a strong run of home games can help close the season on a high.

“After this block, we’ll have played 10 away games,” Driscoll said. “If we can win the remaining away fixtures, we’re confident we can build momentum and go on a run to finish the year.”

As for what gives him belief in this group?

“Every team we play, we win the physical battle,” he said. “Our coaches are working hard now to help us take our opportunities with the ball and improve our defence on last plays. If we do that, we’re confident we can get an away win this weekend.”
