Newcastle Knights Defeat Kaiviti Silktails in Gritty Jersey Flegg Clash

The Newcastle Knights secured a hard-fought 28-14 victory over the Kaiviti Silktails in an action-packed encounter filled with heavy hits, disciplinary tests, and dramatic shifts in momentum.

First Half: Silktails Strike First Before Knights Level
The match opened with intense pressure as both sides tested each other’s discipline. The Knights faced early setbacks with penalties conceded by Melchizedek Nonu for a dangerous tackle and Diesel Hagan for marker not square. The Silktails capitalised on the mounting possession, receiving several early set restarts.
The breakthrough came in the 6th minute when Silktails forward Sailosi Molikula tore through the defensive line. After making a clean linebreak, Molikula crashed over for the opening try. Iowani Mainalovo successfully added the extras from the tee, giving the Silktails an early 6-0 advantage.
The Knights didn’t take long to respond. Following a ruck infringement penalty against the Silktails’ Atunaisa Koba, Newcastle marched down the field. In the 10th minute, Archie McIlwain found a gap, recording a crucial linebreak and diving over to score. Tallan Egan slotted the conversion to quickly lock the scores up at 6-6.
As the half began to wind down, a discipline error from the Knights’ Riley Wells for putting pressure on the kicker allowed the Silktails back into attacking territory. Opting for the points, Iowani Mainalovo calmly knocked over a penalty shot in the 26th minute, edging the Silktails back in front 8-6 to secure the half-time lead.

A surge from the Kaiviti Silktails was rewarded when skipper Gabby Rawamila crossed the white for a try, but a controversial decision from the linesman denied them claiming he was held up. Similarly along the 29th minute, Atunaisa crossed for a try but again, a repeat from the skips clanger, the Silktails were denied once again. Just before the break, the Silktails showed another glimpse of their dangerous counter-attacking ability when Seremaia Ramasima broke the line in the 37th minute, but the Knights scrambled effectively to prevent further damage.

Second Half: Knights Take Control
The second half began with both teams struggling to find an edge as handling errors mounted from Tallan Egan and Archie McIlwain, as well as the Silktails’ Bale Vetaukula and Sailosi Molikula.
The deadlock was broken in the 59th minute when Newcastle’s Tye Wicks made a brilliant linebreak and crashed over for a try. Tallan Egan booted the conversion to put the Knights ahead 12-8. Newcastle quickly struck again in the 62nd minute, with Kingston Seve carving through for a linebreak and a try of his own. Although Egan missed the conversion, the Knights had established a 16-8 lead.
The physical toll of the game intensified, leading to a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) with Sevanaia Tovuto leaving the field for the Silktails. Discipline slipped again for Kaiviti when Inoke Bolakoro gave away a dangerous tackle penalty in the 65th minute. Capitalising on the field position, Diesel Hagan executed a clean linebreak to score in the 66th minute. Tallan Egan added the extra two points, blowing the lead out to 22-8.

Late Resurgence and the Final Blow
Refusing to back down, the Silktails launched a late counter-offensive. In the 73rd minute, Sailosi Molikula executed another powerful line break, fighting his way over the line in the 74th minute to secure his second try of the match. Iowani Mainalovo nailed the conversion to close the gap to 22-14.
A flurry of late handling errors from Fia Colati, William Bates, and Seremaia Ramasima disrupted the closing minutes, but Newcastle put the game entirely out of reach in the final moments. In the 79th minute, William Bates tore through for a late linebreak and a try. Tallan Egan iced the game with a successful conversion just before the siren, sealing the final scoreline at 28-14.
