Gabriel Tunimakubu Silktail #116 Joins Fiji Bati Squad for Pacific Championship

In a remarkable turn of events, Gabriel Tunimakubu Silktail #116, the esteemed captain of the Kaiviti Silktails Rugby League Football Club, has been selected as an injury cover for the Fiji Bati squad in the upcoming Pacific Championship, following an injury to Ben Nakubuwai. This opportunity comes as a dream realized for the young athlete, who has made significant strides in his rugby league career after being discovered through a talent pathway that has been both challenging and rewarding.

Speaking from New Zealand, where he was enjoying a well-deserved holiday, Gabby recounted the moment he received the unexpected call that would change his life. “I was on holiday enjoying my stay in NZ when I got a call-up that I wasn’t expecting,” he shared. “From a little kid watching Fiji Bati play, I fell in love with the game, and I have been enjoying it so far. A dream come true, I can say. I’m grateful and honored, and I thank God for that. When you have your plan, but God has the last say.”

Gabby’s journey to this point has been nothing short of inspiring. As noted by Stephen Driscoll, Executive Director of the Kaiviti Silktails, Gabby’s path has seen its challenges. After graduating from Queen Victoria School (QVS) in Tailevu, he faced a setback when the North Queensland Cowboys released him following a stint in their Academy in 2024. However, fate smiled upon him when Silktails Chairman, Petero Civoniceva, noticed Gabby’s talent during a charity game against the Mareeba Gladiators.

Civoniceva’s keen eye for talent recognized not only Gabby’s physical prowess but also his character. “He impressed me not just on the field but with the way he carried himself off the field,” said Civoniceva. “I offered him an opportunity to join the Silktails, and after impressing Coach Timoce Duve with his leadership, he was named club captain and awarded the 2025 James Dack medal for Clubman of the Year.”

In the midst of a demanding rugby league season, Gabby received the call from the Fiji Bati team management. “I received a call asking for Gabby’s availability with Ben Nakubuwai away in New Zealand with family,” Driscoll explained, highlighting the importance of the opportunity for the young player.

Petero Civoniceva expressed immense pride in Gabby’s achievements, stating, “The Kaiviti Silktails RLFC serves as a development pathway for our best local Rugby League youth talent in Fiji. We are incredibly proud of our Club Captain, who has not only shown excellence on the field but has also been a wonderful leader off the field, setting a strong example for our players.”

Civoniceva reflected on his initial encounter with Gabby, recalling the celebrity game they both participated in. “I had been tipped off about this young Fijian who was a standout for a local team. When we played against each other, Gabby stood out immediately for his tough carries and fierce defense. I approached him after the match and asked if he’d be keen to join the Silktails—he agreed on the spot!”

Now approaching his 20th birthday, Gabriel is highly regarded in Mareeba for his impressive performances against seasoned competitors in the North Queensland league. He is eager to return to Fiji and start pre-season with the Silktails in preparation for the 2025 season, fully committed to his development and the advancement of Fijian rugby league.
