The Kaiviti Silktails Rugby League Football Club is making waves in the local rugby league scene in Fiji, particularly with a focus on supporting the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League and the Mua I Ra competition. This dedication to grassroots development not only highlights the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent but also enriches the rugby league community throughout the region.

This year, the Silktails have invested over $20,000 in ground hire at various stadiums across Fiji, with all proceeds returning to the relevant organizations involved. This financial support is crucial for local teams, providing them with the opportunity to compete at some of the best venues in the country. Teams from Fiji Secondary Schools, the Men’s Vodafone Cup, FNRLW competitions, and even three FNRL International Matches have all benefited from being able to showcase their skills in high-quality stadiums—venues that the Silktails are also familiar with as they compete against 13 NRL clubs.

Executive Director Stephen Driscoll emphasized the club’s commitment, stating, “Our club provides an Elite Pathway for local under-21 players in Fiji. With all the work that comes with that, it is our commitment to supporting secondary schools and community footy that most of the time goes unnoticed. In 2025, we have committed over $20,000 to ground hire so these teams can play before and after us and let these community organizations keep the matchday revenue.

“That, along with so many other gestures such as opening up our facilities for teams to train in, housing players and officials in our dorm facilities, and providing financial support to ease logistical costs. As much as we have a responsibility to those that represent our club, we also have a responsibility to the game of rugby league in Fiji, and that is what makes this club so great.”

One unique aspect of the Kaiviti Silktails’ initiative is their decision to not take a single cent from gate takings. This is a testament to their genuine passion for the sport and their unwavering support for local rugby league. The Silktails are proud to play the most home games of any team in Fiji, with 12 out of their 26 rounds in the Jersey Flegg competition taking place at home. The club has graciously shared their grounds with local competitions and organizations, fostering an environment of collaboration and growth.

Through this commitment to local rugby league, the Kaiviti Silktails are not just building a competitive team; they are laying the groundwork for future generations of rugby league players in Fiji. By investing in local talent and providing them with the opportunities they deserve, the Silktails are ensuring that the sport continues to thrive in the region.

The Kaiviti Silktails Rugby League Football Club is proving that true passion for sports goes beyond the field; it’s about nurturing a community, sharing resources, and lifting each other up. Together, they are forging a brighter future for rugby league in Fiji.
