The Kaiviti Silktails have faced some player injury and suspension tribulations lately that will test the Silktail group affectionately known as the “Baby Silktails” – with the average age of the entire 2023 Silktails squad 20.5.
Three of the Silktails Senior Players have faced injury and suspensions in Round 4 of the NSWRL Ron Massey Cup last weekend, ruling them out of their Round 5 Home Game.
Silktails Prop Watisoni Waqanisaravi has been suspended for three (3) weeks due to a dangerous charge, alongside Halves pairing Sunia Naruma and Rusiate Baleitamavua who have both been ruled out of Round 5 due to injury and suspension, respectively.
Naruma has an infection in his arm which has gone to the bone, and Baleitamavua, although suspended under the new hip drop rule, would have been out anyway with a broken nose sustained during the Round 4 match.
In addition, Centre Simone Cakauniqio has also been ruled out after failing concussion protocols.
With these Senior Players out, Silktails Head Coach Wes Naiqama has put in the younger players – acknowledging the opportunity this presents for him to see where they are at.
“We are in a bit of a crisis at the moment with injuries and suspensions, but it forces me to blood some young guys and get a look at them early in the season” said Naiqama.
19-year-old Fiji Secondary School and Ba Provincial born Five-Eight; Watisoni Druma, will make his debut for the Silktails in their Round 5 Home Game at Churchill Park, Lautoka, this weekend – partnering with Ponipate Komai in the halves.
