Slow Start Proves Costly as Silktails Fight Back in Second Half
The Kaiviti Silktails were unable to recover from a difficult opening 40 minutes, going down 30-10 despite showing encouraging signs of resilience and attacking enterprise in the second half.
The visitors struck early, capitalising on an error in the opening exchanges before Tenzin Contor crossed in the 4th minute and converted his own try to give his side a 6-0 advantage.
The Silktails responded strongly just minutes later. A damaging line break from Savenaca Turaga saw the centre race away to score before calmly converting his own try to level the scores at 6-6 after just 10 minutes, providing the home side with valuable momentum.
Unfortunately, the remainder of the first half belonged to the visitors.
A line break from Benjamin Keene-O’Keefe created the opportunity for Lachlan Metcalfe to score in the 14th minute before Contor added the extras for a 12-6 lead. Defensive pressure continued to mount, with Beau McKee crossing in the 31st minute before Keene-O’Keefe added another just four minutes later, extending the halftime margin to 24-6.
The Silktails were forced into a number of early interchanges through the opening half while also battling costly handling errors that prevented them from building sustained pressure.
The visitors added their fifth try shortly after halftime when Max Davies finished another attacking raid to stretch the advantage to 30-6.
To the Silktails’ credit, they refused to go away.
Strong carries through the middle and improved field position finally paid dividends midway through the second half. A break from Sailosi Molikula created an opportunity before Inoke Bolakoro powered over in the 65th minute. Although the conversion attempt drifted wide, the try rewarded the Silktails’ improved effort and reduced the final margin to 30-10.
While the scoreboard ultimately favoured the visitors, the Silktails produced several encouraging attacking moments throughout the contest. Savenaca Turaga was dangerous whenever he touched the football, Sailosi Molikula consistently threatened the defensive line, while Inoke Bolakoro’s second-half try highlighted the determination shown by the side despite the deficit.
The difference ultimately came through execution. A number of handling errors and penalties handed the opposition valuable field position, allowing them to convert pressure into points. The Silktails also missed opportunities to build momentum after creating line breaks and attacking chances of their own.
