The Australian Government’s Office of the Pacific is a proud supporter of Pacific teams entering high-level Australian sporting competitions.This is one of the reasons why Australia, through its flagship Pacific high-performance sports program, PacificAus Sports, became one of the first major sponsors of the Kaiviti Silktails RLFC in January 2019 through to 2023.
The inclusion of the Silktails in the NSWRL 2020 Ron Massey Cup will help grow rugby league in Fiji and bring new economic and career opportunities for Fijian players, coaches and match officials. PacificAus Sports was pleased to have played a founding role in making the team a reality and delighted that other sponsors have lined up to support the team.
Under the Pacific Step-up, PacificAus Sports aims to strengthen our sporting links with the Pacific through high-performance sport and gives priority to activities that seek to:
- Develop pathways for Pacific teams to play in high-level Australian sporting competitions
- Support Australian teams to increase their presence and participation in the Pacific, and
- Create pathways for emerging Pacific athletes to benefit from high-performance coaching and training.
PacificAus Sports works across all sports to expand partnerships with Pacific sports teams and organisations in netball, rugby union, football and rugby league. The program is delivered through partnerships between Australian and Pacific island sports organisations, with a particular focus on Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu.
