KNIGHTS DOMINATE SILKTAILS IN ROUND 22

The Newcastle Knights secured a convincing 34 – 20 victory over the Kaiviti Silktails in an event-filled rugby league clash, largely driven by an explosive early-game blitz and disciplined scoring from Kade McKay.

Despite a mid-match surge and a hat-trick performance by Silktails winger Maikeli Sadranu, early discipline issues and several costly errors prevented the Silktails from completing the comeback.

First Half: Knights Blitz & Silktails Disciplinary Trouble

  • 0’–6′ | Rapid Start by Knights: The Newcastle Knights opened with dominant attacking sets. Kade McKay struck early with a back-to-back scoring effort, converting his own try to make it 6–0. Almost instantly, William Bates crashed over (converted by McKay) to jump out to a 12–0 lead.
  • 4′ | Silktails Sin Bin: Discipline issues surfaced early for the Silktails when Ratu Kikau received a yellow card and was sent to the Sin Bin for pressure on the kicker, leaving the Silktails short-handed.
  • 6’–13′ | Knights Capitalize: Capitalizing on the numerical advantage, Kade McKay broke through for another converted try, followed by a linebreak try from William Manning in the 13th minute to extend the advantage to 22–0.
  • 17’–22′ | Silktails Response: Upon Kikau’s return from the sin bin, the Silktails finally found their rhythm. Maikeli Sadranu executed a brilliant linebreak try in the 17th minute (converted by Weni Turagaitoga). Just minutes later, Sadranu crossed the line again for his second try to bring the Silktails back into the contest at 22–10.

Second Half: Knights Hold the Line & Late Drama

  • 53′ | Knights Break the Silence: Following a period of back-and-forth errors and set restarts early in the second half, Knights forward Wil Hope breached the line for a critical try, converted by Kade McKay to make it 28–10.
  • 73′ | Silktails Fightback: The Silktails refused to bow out. Weni Turagaitoga carved through the Knights’ defense with a linebreak and finished the try himself, converting it to cut the deficit to 28–16.
  • 80′ | Dramatic Final Minute:
    • Kade McKay sealed the match for Newcastle, capitalizing on a Silktails error to score and convert a late try, extending the lead to 34–16.
    • The Silktails fought until the final hooter, with Maikeli Sadranu capping off his brilliant game by completing a hat-trick at 80:00. A missed conversion concluded the match at 34–20.
