Suliasi Ramasima, a former rugby 7s player and two-time Hong Kong champion, is incredibly thankful for the Silktails program, which has played an instrumental role in his son, Seremaia Ramasima’s development both as an athlete and as an individual. Reflecting on Seremaia’s recent debut in Round 6 of the Jersey Flegg, despite the team’s loss to the Bulldogs, Suliasi emphasizes the significant growth he has observed in his son.
“We’ve definitely seen changes in his lifestyle as well. When he entered the program, he was really young, and seeing him and talking to him now, he’s really grown spiritually and mentally,” Suliasi shared. His gratitude for the program underscores its contributions beyond athletic training. “We’re very thankful for the program that the Silktails are running.”
Suliasi expresses immense pride in Seremaia’s achievements and passion for rugby league. “It is always a proud moment to see our kids achieve something and enjoy doing it. And for Seremaia to continue our family rugby legacy in rugby league is exhilarating.” He is excited about Seremaia taking up rugby league, noting, “The passion shown from him towards the sport is astonishing. Forging his name in the sport through his passion is something I’m looking forward to.”
As a father with experience in rugby, Suliasi has instilled essential values in Seremaia. “Values act as a guiding principle in every sport. Ever since Seremaia started his playing career, I’ve constantly reminded him of values like discipline, respect, and promoting positive behavior while ensuring he plays with integrity. These lessons are valuable, helping him on his journey both on and off the field.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Suliasi emphasizes that hard work trumps talent. “Hard work pays off big time. There’s a saying that hard work beats talent any day. The most memorable moment for me was being selected for Fiji in 7s, knowing some players who were more gifted than me didn’t make it. Self-discipline is crucial because when family and friends are enjoying various activities, you have to make the decision whether to keep grinding or give in.”
He also points to the evolution of rugby from his playing days, discussing the distinct demands of different forms of the sport. “The fast pace and intricate play, along with the fitness requirements, differentiate league and union.”
Suliasi emphasizes the spiritual aspect of the game, stating, “To use that platform to glorify God. Whatever he does, he should do it as if he is working for the Lord.”
Recognizing the opportunities available to young players today, he observes, “Young players nowadays are so blessed with the kind of opportunities available for them. Back then, only a few kids made it to the big stage, and most of the best players couldn’t find that break due to limited resources.”
Suliasi admires Seremaia’s unique character, saying, “Seremaia is unique in every aspect of his life. With the level of preparation he’s on right now at a young age, I am nowhere near him and his style of play.” He believes his son can achieve great things: “Seremaia can go as far as he would like to go. Given the environment he’s in and with the right attitude, nothing can stop him.”
Finally, Suliasi expresses his heartfelt feelings, stating, “I’m overwhelmed knowing that my son has this chance of achieving something I only dreamt of.”
Through his reflections, Suliasi Ramasima highlights the critical role that mentorship, values-based guidance, and the Silktails program play in shaping the future of young athletes like Seremaia. This journey is not just about rugby; it embodies a legacy of passion and dedication that will inspire future generations.
